Hugo Lassalle, a German Jesuit, whose naturalized Japanese name is Makibi Enomiya, thought of building the Memorial Cathedral for World Peace as a symbol of everlasting peace, remembering the world’s first atomic bomb victims. He himself was wounded by the A-bomb. In four years time, the cathedral was founded on August 6, 1954. The architect Togo Murano intended the cathedral to be modern, Japanese, religious, and a memorial.  In the 45 meter tower of the cathedral, there is a belfry of peace donated by Bochmer Verein, a casting company from West Germany. The factory manufactured war weapons during the World War II. One of the four bells in the belfry is inscribed in Latin, “May the steel from weapons of war now help bring peace to the people.” This quote was taken from an exhibit, “The Prolific World of Togo Murano,” in the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, May 16th –July 9th, 2017,
